Throughout the two days from 9th to 10th of September 2019, the 4th Japan-Mexico Rectors Summit was held in Mexico City with the participation of 23 universities from Japan and 38 from Mexico. From Âé¶¹AV (HU), President Mitsuo Ochi, Executive Vice President Toshiyuki Sato, and Specially Appointed Professor Naotaka Hirami attended the summit. The summit on the first day was held in the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), and on the second day, it moved to another venue in El Colegio de M¨¦xico (COLMEX).
The opening ceremony was attended by the Mexican Foreign Secretary Marcelo Ebrard as well as Deputy Minister of Public Education Juan Pablo Arroyo. During the opening ceremony, President Ochi gave an address on behalf of the delegates from Japan. In his address, President Ochi stressed the importance of roles served by universities in solving global issues confronting the world. He also pointed out that these issues will not be solved without the viewpoints of ¡°Peace¡± and ¡°Sustainability¡±, showing HU¡¯s determination to fulfill its unprecedented missions as the university established in the city that suffered the first atomic bomb attack in history.
Then, four sessions were held entitled ¡°Society 5.0¡±, ¡°The Role of Universities towards Sustainability¡±, ¡°Natural Phenomena-related Hazards and Risks¡± and ¡°The Future of the Universities¡± where representatives from universities in the both countries presented their efforts, after which the participants had a lively discussion.
In conclusion of the summit, universities from the both countries announced the joint statement showing their intention to further expand academic exchange between the two countries. The next Japan-Mexico Rectors Summit is scheduled to be held in Japan.
