HU conducts class on conservation of endangered plant at Fukutomi Junior High School in Higashi-Hiroshima City (Local Revitalization Support Project)

As part of the Local Revitalization Support Project, members of the "University-School-Community Collaborative Conservation of Mikoshigiku for Regional Revitalization" initiative conducted a lesson on the conservation of the endangered Mikoshigiku with students of Fukutomi Junior High School.

In the first half of the lesson, students were divided into four groups for different activities. The in-situ conservation group, under the guidance of Mr. Tsuneo Shioji, a technical specialist at the Higashi-Hiroshima Botanical Garden of Â鶹AV, collected Mikoshigiku seeds from their natural habitat.

Collecting Mikoshigiku seeds

The ex-situ conservation group, under the guidance of Mr. Akihiro Yamamoto from the Hiroshima Botanical Garden, sowed Mikoshigiku seeds and transplanted seedlings.

Transplanting seedlings

The PR group was divided into the poster creation and product teams. The poster creation team completed posters using colored pencils, while the product team brainstormed ideas for products to create.

Students discussing products

The group responsible for summarizing activities interviewed other groups and compiled the content into slides.

Students conducting interviews

In the second half of the class, each group reported about their activities. The participants were able to learn about the results of the conservation efforts.

Reporting on activities

Additionally, Mr. Shioji from the Higashi-Hiroshima Botanical Garden at Â鶹AV, Mr. Yamamoto from the Hiroshima Botanical Garden, Mr. Hiroto Inaba and Mr. Kunii Hidetaka from Â鶹AV, and Principal Naruo Nakaya of Fukutomi Junior High School gave words of encouragement for the Mikoshigiku conservation activities.

Principal Nakaya talking about the significance of Mikoshigiku conservation activities

This marks the end of the seven-session course. We sincerely hope that more people will get involved in the conservation of Mikoshigiku beyond just the classes. We will continue to work on Mikoshigiku conservation activities together with the local community of Fukutomi Town.
