Policy

At Âé¶¹AV, students required to have a laptop because they will use it in many situations, including attending lectures such as ¡°Introduction to University Education¡±, reports writing, theses writing, online lectures, etc.
Students have to log in to the student information website to complete various procedures such as class registration, grades check and confirmation of communication from teachers and administrative offices, etc. Other than that, laptop is necessary in your whole campus life. Therefore, you must prepare a laptop before enrolling.

About a Laptop as a Requisite Tool for students

Purpose

  • Continuously producing people with ability to make the best use of information and communication technology in advanced information-oriented society.
  • Extending educational power with the advanced EdTech.
  • Promoting paperless distribution and submission of educational materials.

Measures

We promote the following measures.

  • Increasing the number of courses that use Student PC.
  • Improvement and enhancement of the computer usage environment, including wireless LAN (Wi-Fi) facilities on campus.
  • Lending a laptop for a long term to students who don't have Student PC for financial reasons

In addition, Âé¶¹AV has a comprehensive license agreement with Microsoft. Under this license, students of HU may install anti-virus software and applications software (Microsoft Office) for free.

Required Specifications of the Laptop Computer that You Must Prepare Before Enrollment

* If you already have a laptop computer meeting these specifications, you may use it. You do not need to get a new one.

1. Software specifications: 

  • The OS must be either Windows or macOS and has not expired at the time of enrollment.
  • The following applications should work lightly.
    • The latest version of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
    • Antivirus software (Every student at Âé¶¹AV is required anti-virus protection on personal laptop computers and is as a basic measure.)

2. Hardware specifications: 

  • Have a wireless LAN.
  • The wireless LAN standard must be compatible with 5 GHz band (IEEE802.11a or IEEE802.11ac or IEEE802.11ax).
  • Memory should be at least 8 GB.
  • Battery operation time in the specifications should be at least 8 hours.
  • Have a keyboard.

3. Recommendations: 

  • A camera and a microphone should be available on your laptop (external is acceptable).
  • Internet access should be available at home.

4. Notes: 

  • Windows 10 support expires on 14 October 2025, so you will need to upgrade to Windows 11 by the end of the support period. If your PC is compatible with Windows 11, you can upgrade to Windows 11 free of charge (Reference:).
  • Some Windows applications may not run on Windows Arm version. Please confirm the installed CPU and OS and the compatibility of the application you plan to use in advance.
  • In order to use Windows applications on Mac terminals, you will need to purchase and install software and license by yourself. In addition, some Windows applications may not run.


Please note that students who will enroll in the following schools/departments must install the OS specified below:

  • School of Letters
    • The PC must be equipped with camera and microphone. (external is also acceptable).
  • School of Education, Cluster I (School Education), Program in Special Needs Education
    • Windows is necessary in some classes. If you are taking that course and your computer runs on macOS, please install Windows.
      In this case, you need to purchase an individual license. (Refer to ¡°4.Notes¡±)
  • School of Education, Cluster II (Science, Technology and Society Education), Program in Technology and Informatics Education
    • Windows is necessary in some classes. If you are taking that course and your computer runs on macOS, please install Windows.
      In this case, you need to purchase an individual license. (Refer to ¡°4.Notes¡±)
    • Login username should be alphanumeric.
  • School of Education, Cluster IV (Life-long Activities Education), Program in Health and Sports Education
    • Windows is necessary in some classes. If you are taking such a course and your computer runs on macOS, please install Windows.
      In this case, you need to purchase an individual license. (Refer to ¡°4.Notes¡±)
  • School of Education, Cluster V (Fundamentals for Education and Human Development), Program in Psychology
    • Windows is necessary in some classes. If you are taking such a course and your computer runs on macOS, please install Windows.
      In this case, you need to purchase an individual license. (Refer to ¡°4.Notes¡±)
  • School of Law£¨Day Course£©£¨Evening Course£©
    • (Recommended) For Windows, Windows 11 (64bit version) or newer is required. MacOS users also need to install Windows. In this case, an individual license purchase is required. (Refer to ¡°4.Notes¡±) . 
    • (Recommended) The PC should be equipped with a connector (HDMI, VGA, etc.) that can be connected to an external display or projector (conversion adapters are also acceptable). 
  • School of Economics£¨Day Course£©£¨Evening Course£©
    • At the initial setup, Login username should be alphanumeric. 
    • For Windows, Windows 11 (64bit version) or newer is required. If the computer is under Windows 10, it must be compatible with Windows 11 (64-bit version). 
    • MacOS users also need to install Windows. In this case, an individual license purchase is required(Refer to ¡°4.Notes¡±). And also, MacOS Ventura or newer is required.
    • (Recommended) If you will learn data analysis and simulation, your laptop should have at least 16 GB of memory.
    • (Recommended) The PC should be equipped with a connector (HDMI, VGA, etc.) that can be connected to an external display or projector (conversion adapters are also acceptable).
    • (Recommended) The storage capacity should be SSD of 256 GB or more. 
  • School of Science, Mathematics
    • Memory must be 8 GB or more(16 GB or more is recommended).
    • The storage capacity must be SSD of 256 GB or more(512GB or more is recommended).
  • School of Science, Biological Science
    • The PC should be equipped with a connector that can be connected to an external display(Full-size HDMI or D-sub15pin VGA). If the PC cannot be connected directly, prepare one of the conversion adapters (HDMI recommended). 
  • School of Science, Earth and Planetary Systems Science
    A PC with Windows 11 OS that has an Intel or AMD Intel¨Ccompatible CPU. *1
    (Notes) The followings are recommendations. 
    • Memory is 16GB or more.*2
    • System disk is SSD and 256GB or more.*2
    • Size of Display is 13inches or more.*3
      *1 Windows is necessary in some classes.
      *2 Some classes use Linux for virtualization.
      *3 For ease of viewing the screen.
  • School of Medicine, Program of Medicine
    Prepare a combination of the following (1), (2) or ABC.
    (1) A highly accurate touch pen (Stylus pen) with electromagnetic/electrostatic type
    (2) A laptop that can use a stylus pen and meets the specifications of the university
    or
    A. A highly accurate touch pen (Stylus pen) with electromagnetic/electrostatic type
    B. A laptop that meets the specifications of the university
    C. A tablet that can use a stylus pen 
    (Reference) If you are not familiar with PC operation, Windows is recommended.
  • School of Medicine, Program of Health Sciences
    • The PC must be equipped with camera and microphone.(external is also acceptable)
  • School of Dentistry, Program of Dentistry
    • The PC must be equipped with camera and microphone.(external is also acceptable)
    • (Recommended) The PC should be equipped with a connector (HDMI, VGA, etc.) that can be connected to an external display or projector (conversion adapters are also acceptable).
  • School of Dentistry, Program of Dentistry and Program of Oral Health Sciences
    • The PC must be equipped with camera and microphone.(external is also acceptable)
    • (Recommended) The PC should be equipped with a connector (HDMI, VGA, etc.) that can be connected to an external display or projector (conversion adapters are also acceptable).
  • School of Pharmaceutical Sciences
    • A laptop computer is required. (iPads and other tablet devices are not acceptable).  
    • (Recommended) The storage capacity should be 500 GB or more.
    • (Recommended) The PC should be equipped with a USB Type-A port (external connection is also acceptable).
    • (Recommended) The PC should be equipped with a connector (HDMI, VGA, etc.) that can be connected to an external display or projector (conversion adapters are also acceptable).
  • School of Engineering, Cluster I
    • The PC must have Windows 11 (64-bit version) installed.
    • Must be equipped with a mouse.
  • School of Engineering, Cluster II
    • Windows is required. If your computer runs macOS, you will need to install Windows. In this case, you must purchase a separate license. (Refer to ¡°4.Notes¡± for details.)
    • The CPU must be at least an Intel Core i7 (11th Gen or later), Intel Core i5 (12th Gen or later), or an AMD Ryzen series of equivalent specifications. When purchasing a new PC, we recommend a CPU that is at least an Intel Core i7 (12th Gen or later), Intel Core i5 (13th Gen or later), or an AMD Ryzen series of equivalent specifications.
    • The system must have at least 16GB of memory and 256GB or greater of storage capacity.
    • The PC must include an HDMI port or another connector compatible with external displays or projectors (conversion adapters are acceptable).
    • The following configurations are not recommended:
      • ARM-based Windows OS (e.g., running on Snapdragon CPUs)
      • ARM-based macOS (e.g., running on Apple Silicon, including virtual Windows environments via Parallels)
        £ªThese configurations are not recommended due to compatibility issues causing standard Windows programs to malfunction.
  • School of Engineering, Cluster III
    • Windows is recommended. If your computer runs on macOS, please install Windows.
      In this case, you need to purchase an individual license. (Refer to ¡°4.Notes¡±)
  • School of Engineering, Cluster IV
    • Memory must be 16 GB or more.
    • The PC should be equipped with a connector (HDMI, VGA, etc.) that can be connected to an external display or projector (conversion adapters are also acceptable). 
      (Reference) If you are assigned to the Architecture Program after second year, your PC recommended to meet the following requirements. 
      ?Windows version must be windows 11 (64-bit version) or later.
      ?Memory must be 32 GB or more.
      ?CPU must be Intel Core i7 or AMD Ryzen 7 or higher.
      ?The storage should be equipped with an NVMe SSD.
      ?Display resolution must be Full HD, 1920 x 1080 or higher.
      ?Graphics card must have at least 64GB of VRAM and be compatible with DirectX11.
  • School of Informatics and Data Science, Department of Informatics and Data Science Course Major
    • For Windows, Windows 11 is required. MacOS users also need to install Windowsand some Windows applications may not run. In this case, an individual license purchase is required. (Refer to ¡°4.Notes¡±).
    • CPU must be Intel Core i5 11th generation or later (or equivalent)
    • Memory should be 8GB or more (16GB or more is recommended).
    • Storage capacity must be SSD of 256 GB or more (SSD of 512 GB or more is recommended).

[Important]For those who have difficulty preparing a laptop due to financial difficulty:

Laptop rental service is available for students who have difficulty preparing laptops due to financial reasons. Students who wish to use the service can borrow a laptop for free for a year. Please read ¡°Guidance Regarding Laptop Rental Service¡± in ¡°Student's Guide¡± to check the conditions and other details of the service, and then take the necessary procedures.

Provision of Requisite Software Programs

Âé¶¹AV has a comprehensive license agreement with Microsoft Corporation.
In accordance with this license agreement, students of HU may install the following software programs for free.
(Note) The same contract content will not be the same after the next fiscal year, because the contract contents are reviewed every year.

  • Microsoft Windows (Upgrade / Downgrade)
  • Microsoft Office (for Windows / Mac)
  • Anti-virus software (for Windows / Mac)
    • Windows license is required for Windows upgrade / downgrade.
    • For a computer with Windows 10 or a later version, use Defender bundled with the OS as a standard feature.

Startup Workshop for Your Laptop (required for all students)

In the workshop, you will learn how to access to campus wireless LAN, login to the student portal website MOMIJI, install and confirm the installation of anti-virus software, and other matters. This workshop will be conducted in a self-study.

Freshmen should be required to conduct below,

  • 1. Initial setting and check of your own PC by yourself referring to "".
  • 2. Submit the "Laptop Checklist 2025" via , the online learning system.

¡öFor the freshmen who are hard to set up and check them by themselves.

If you cannot complete the setup on your own, assistance is available at the Support rooms or via phone or email.
