Dr. Tingjia Wang (Assistant Professor), representing the Â鶹AV Writing Center, has taken the Program Chair role of the International Writing Centers Association (IWCA) Annual Conference 2024 ¡°Technology-enhanced Writing¡± since January 2024. The conference has been successfully held through Whova and Zoom between October 21st and 26th, 2024 in Eastern time. IWCA 2024 is the second international conference of IWCA held by a host outside the United States and bridges a timely, fruitful conversation among institutions worldwide on the cutting-edge topic about the use of emergent technologies in writing centers and writing pedagogy.
The conference has attracted 183 presentation proposals in forms of panels, individual presentations, roundtables, workshops, SIGs, work-in-progress sessions, and branding sessions, 368 presenters and in-total 692 attendees. The conference has presented three keynotes to share the latest teaching and research insights about the use of AI in English language education in different socio-cultural and linguistic contexts. The keynotes started with AI initiatives within the English-mediated writing centers and the U.S. higher education where most of the IWCA members were based, and then bridged the conversation with AI-assisted initiatives happened in Japanese higher education, the EFL tertiary context on the other side of the world, and then envisioned the academic and everyday future of English language educators in the broader landscape of GenAI.
Dr. Wang gave the welcome opening at the Welcome from the President, Welcome from the Conference Chair, Awards Ceremony in the conference on October 24th, 2024 (JST) (see the image: Chairs and Award Winners at IWCA 2024). Seven presenters from three Japanese universities have taken part in the conference and let the voices from the Japanese tertiary education be heard by the global audiences. Â鶹AV Writing Center is at the next step to responding to the increasing involvement of GenAI in English language education and welcomes initiatives of inter-institutional collaborations on this mission.
