David MacMillan, 2021 Nobel laureate in Chemistry, gives lecture at Â鶹AV

Lecture by Dr. MacMillan

On January 10, 2025, the 6th edition of "From Â鶹AV to the World ¨C The Wisdom of World-Renowned Researchers" was held at Paraca Auditorium 257, School of Economics, Higashi-Hiroshima Campus. The event featured Dr. David MacMillan of Princeton University, USA, as the guest speaker and drew approximately 500 participants, including high school students, university students, faculty, and staff, both in person and online.

Dr. MacMillan was awarded the 2021 Nobel Prize in Chemistry along with Dr. Benjamin List for their significant contributions to the advancement of organocatalysis research through the development of a third type of catalyst called asymmetric organocatalysis, which is environmentally friendly and inexpensive to produce.

The event began with remarks on the Nobel Prize by HU Professor Takuya Kumamoto, followed by an opening address from President Mitsuo Ochi. Dr. MacMillan then delivered a lecture titled "Organocatalysis: The Pathway to Discovery in Catalysis," sharing insights into the research that earned him the Nobel Prize.

After the lecture, high school students asked a series of questions, to which MacMillan responded thoughtfully in a warm and engaging atmosphere.

To conclude the event, Executive Vice President Junko Tanaka (Kasumi Campus, Faculty Personnel and Public Relations) presented MacMillan with a bouquet and a commemorative gift, followed by closing remarks from Executive Vice President Seiichi Miyazaki (Research), bringing the event to a successful close.
