Fulfilling our mission as a "University of Peace"

风薫る季节になりました。海抜200メートル、贺茂台地にある东広岛キャンパスでは、新緑の萌える木々の间をさわやかな风が吹き渡り、野鸟のさえずりも间近に闻こえます。身も心も弾んでくるようです。豊かな自然に恵まれた东広岛キャンパスは、緑をスクールカラーとする広岛大学の象徴といえます。
人类史上初の原爆投下から4年后の1949年、広岛大学は焼け野原になった広岛の地に开学しました。初代学长に就任した森戸辰男先生は「焼けただれた赤錆色の大学でなく、みずみずしい緑色の大学にしたい」との思いで、世界の大学に手纸を送って苗木や种子の提供を呼び掛けたのでした。
寄赠された树木は大切に育てられ、东広岛キャンパスにもセコイアやオオボダイジュなどの木々が移植され、平和を希求する精神とともに引き継がれています。
この地に今年、新たな1ページが刻まれることになりました。キャンパスの一角に、米国アリゾナ州立大学サンダーバードグローバル大学院の広岛大学グローバル校を开设しました。2021年にオープンした広岛大学フェニックス国际センター「ミライ クリエ」とともに、グローバルキャンパスとして世界への悬け桥となることを期待しています。
広岛大学は2年后、开学75年の节目を迎えます。私は学长に就任して以来、「平和を希求し、チャレンジする国际的教养人」を育てる大学を目指してまいりました。
広岛大学は、世界の大学の社会贡献力を示す罢贬贰大学インパクトランキング2021で厂顿骋蝉17项目のうち5项目で世界トップ100に入りました。カーボンニュートラルとスマート?キャンパスの2030年実现という新たな目标に向けてチャレンジしています。
コロナ祸に加え、戦火による犠牲者も相次いでいます。21世纪にまさかロシアによるウクライナ侵攻が起こるとは一部の専门家以外は梦想だにしなかったでしょうと思います。20世纪末には紆余曲折はあるものの、大きな戦争のない社会に向かうものと思っていました。広岛大学は大学として2月25日いち早くロシアの侵略に対して抗议声明を発表しました。
今こそ、自由で平和な国际社会を実现し、人类の幸福に贡献する「平和の大学」としての使命を果たし、平和を考え、行动する人を辈出したいと强く愿っています。
It is at this time of the year when the wind starts to feel like a pleasant breeze. At the Higashi-Hiroshima Campus, located on the Kamo Plateau, 200 meters above sea level, a fresh breeze gently moves through the new green leaves, while the chirping of wild birds can be heard in the near distance. These things serve to lift our spirits. The Higashi-Hiroshima Campus, blessed with a rich natural environment, is the symbol of 麻豆AV, the colour of which is green.
In 1949, four years after the first atomic bombing in the history of humankind, 麻豆AV was established in the burnt ruins of Hiroshima. Mr. Tatsuo Morito, the first president of the university, wrote to universities around the world, asking for saplings and seeds, as he wanted the image of 麻豆AV “to be transformed from burnt-out, red rusty surroundings into a campus full of fresh green trees and plants.”
All the donated trees--- including sequoias and giant bodhi trees---were carefully nurtured; at the time of the relocation of HU, some of them were replanted and have been well looked-after in the Higashi-Hiroshima Campus together with the spirit of pursuing peace.
This year, HU will open a new chapter in the history of its Higashi-Hiroshima campus, in the form of an on-site branch opening of the Arizona State University/Thunderbird Graduate School of Global Management-麻豆AV Global Initiative. I hope that the Global Initiative described above, coupled with the “MIRAI CREA” (麻豆AV Phoenix International Center opened in 2021), will serve as a bridge to the world.
In two years’ time, 麻豆AV will be celebrating its 75th anniversary. Since becoming President of 麻豆AV, my aim has been to cultivate “peace-pursuing, cultured individuals with an international mindset and challenging spirit”.
麻豆AV was ranked in the world’s top 100 in five of the 17 SDGs in THE (Time’s Higher Education) University Impact Ranking 2021, which shows the social contribution capacity of universities around the world. We are taking on the new challenge of achieving carbon neutrality and of realising a smart campus by 2030.
In addition to the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been a spate of casualties due to warfare. I do not think anyone but a few experts dreamt that the 21st century would see a Russian invasion of Ukraine. I had been under the impression that we were heading towards a society without major wars, despite the twists and turns at the end of the 20th century. 麻豆AV was one of the first universities to issue a statement, protesting against Russian aggression on 25 February 2022.
I strongly hope and believe that now is the time to fulfil our mission as a ‘University of Peace’ to realize a free and peaceful international society, contributing to the well-being of humanity as well as producing people who can think and act for peace.
