After graduating from the Faculty of Medicine, Âé¶¹AV, Ochi joined the department of orthopedics at Âé¶¹AV Hospital and received instruction under Professor Kenya Tsuge, a hand surgery expert of global fame. In 1983, he commenced study in Europe. Ochi became a professor at Shimane Medical University when he was 43 years old. In 2002, he became a professor of Graduate School of Biomedical & Health Sciences at Âé¶¹AV. He developed a 3D self-cultured cartilage transplant method, under which cells extracted from a patient with knee cartilage damage are cultured and the cultured cells are transplanted to the patient. In April 2013, this method became the first Japanese-developed regenerative medicine therapy eligible for public insurance coverage. Because of achievements like this, Ochi received the President¡¯s Prize of the Science Council of Japan, awarded by the Cabinet Office for contributions to industry-academia-government collaboration, in 2004; the Commendation for Science and Technology by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (Science and Technology Promotion Category) in 2010; and the Minister of Health, Labour and Welfare award for contributions to industry-academia-government collaboration in 2014. Ochi is also involved in the treatment of injuries suffered by players on the Hiroshima Carp professional baseball team and the Sanfrecce Hiroshima professional soccer team and the prevention of injuries. In 2012, he received the Chugoku Cultural Award.
