On October 20, at the "Welcome Plaza" next to the main office building on the Higashi-Hiroshima Campus, students held an SDGs event in collaboration with the outdoor gear brand Patagonia.
On the day of the event, there was a darning workshop where participants could learn how to repair clothing with holes or thinning fabric. There was also a repair booth run by Patagonia staff. In the darning workshop, students from the Human Life Sciences Education Course in the School of Education, who are aspiring home economics teachers, provided careful support. A total of 39 participants, including children, enjoyed learning the darning techniques.
At Patagonia's repair booth, well-loved favorite clothes and bags were brought back to life by specialized sewing staff. Depending on the area and condition of the repair, some took more time, but users were delighted and amazed at the rejuvenated items they received. Patagonia's Worn Wear College Tour, which had visited five universities since early October this year, saw the highest number of sewing repairs at this event.
Additionally, as a unique initiative by our university, we held a second-hand clothing exchange event using garments collected in advance from five co-op cafeterias. Among the many clothes hanging on the racks, 71 items found new owners. Participants also enjoyed the fun of picking out clothing in different styles from their usual choices, along with their friends.
On the day of the event, strong winds occasionally caused sudden gusts, leading the staff to hold down tools and clothing. Despite this, it turned out to be a meaningful event where participants could appreciate the value of repair and reuse. We would like to thank everyone who cooperated with us.
